About the Tune
This carol has always lent itself naturally to the jazz idiom, and for this arrangement I chose a Latin approach. The Late Peter Schimke brings an extraordinary vitality to the performance. His Cuban inflected phrasing and rhythmic brilliance light up the track. We lost a remarkable artist when Peter passed, and I feel deeply grateful to have his playing preserved here.
Dean Magraw contributes his signature blend of warmth, wit and effortless musical imagination. His tasteful lines and subtle inner conversations with the ensemble are a joy to hear. And holding it all together is Serge Akou, whose bass playing provides both grounding and an irresistible groove. My sincere thanks to each of these exceptional musicians for helping me bring this piece to life.
